First Time in Spain?
How Dining Works Here
Spanish dining culture is wonderfully relaxed and social. A few things to know before you sit down:
- Most dishes come in three sizes: ración (full), media (half), and tapa (small). Order a mix and share — waiters are very accustomed to this.
- You don't need to order everything at once. It's perfectly normal to order more dishes as you go.
- Around lunchtime, bars and bodegas often offer a tapa with a beer or wine for a few euros. Many restaurants also offer a 3-course menu del día for €10–15 including a drink.
- Tips are not expected — they are included in the price. Leaving a little extra is appreciated but entirely optional.
- Opening hours are flexible. Lunch is typically served from 2–4pm, dinner from 8pm onwards. Always check ahead.
Our Recommendation
Use TripAdvisor to check the latest reviews before visiting any restaurant — ownership and quality can change. Most restaurants offer online booking; calling ahead is also perfectly normal.
